@ genghis_j... missed the JK thing, Fairfax didn't see fit to mention it in their article only in the list of winners & finalists as the end, but obviously well deserved.
I actually thought Kaino might have got sports man as it wasn't really Richie's greatest year playing-wise, I guess the leadership he showed (esp after Carter's injury) & playing on despite his crook foot had a lot to do with it & fair enough, too.

Meanwhile in semi-SBW-related rugby news, Richie McCaw won sports man of the year, Graham Henry coach of the year, the ABs team of the year & final whistle v France won fan-voted moment of the year at the Halberg sports awards. As far as I know there was no post-award posturing or trash-talking (staged or otherwise)...

@ Trader... the fight may have been a farce - how can NZBA sanction a "Title" fight where 1 of the fighters is'nt even eligible for the Title? - and NZRU should never imo have indulged SBW's boxing pretensions BUT both happened and SBW's a fairly high-profile figure in the game so PR can't simply ignore it.

too bad, I had hoped SBW got a good bashing........

Just watched the fight - are people actually claiming this is boxing? If that's what you have to do to win the NZ Heavyweight title then seriously Kiwis, stick to the rugby, which your actually damn good at. Sure SBW can do as he pleases, fair enough, but if he's going to take this boxing lark seriously he'd better be getting himself ready for a serious beating.
@genghis_j - comparing that to Tyson is ludicrous and David Tua couldn't box when he started and he still couldn't box when he retired. It looks like your quoting someone else, but still.

I totally agree it is subjective. Fact is you cant compare the sports as they are nothing alike its just funny when you get the whole comparison.
Your point about atmosphere is true as well its just like when I went to baseball games it was the banter and drinking beer that made it so fun.
I guess like cricket(which to me would have to be the most boring sport ever)
Oh by the way im a Giants fan so I was very happy for future hall of famer Eli

The SBW show continues! You get one life - if the guy has the desire and the backing to try different things then good on him. Let him do what he likes.

That statement give new impetus to the old adage of there being statistics, damn statistics and lies.
The annual NFL game in London is played at Wembley which holds 90000. New Zealand play England at Twickenham which holds 82000. Assuming both sell out, of course you would see more people at Wembley. This of course also takes no consideration of the hundreds of other top level rugby matches played in London every year and the zero other games of top level NFL played in London every year.
That is hardly an accurate barometer of the games respective popularity.
Actually, having just done a quick check, last NFL game in London had 77000 people and last New Zealand game at Twickenham in excess of 80000. In 5 years NFL teams have played in London Wembley has never sold out.
Think you might want to revisit that one....................

Jump in the ring with SBW - BVD or even Trinats....I know it's a rugby site but to trach the guy when its easier on the keyboard is just rediculous...Don't read it if you find it offensive..

We all know the saying, "everything is bigger in America" & it is still the superpower of the Western world, the country that facinates & is imitated. The NFL is basically the world championship of American football & the final "Superbowl" gets about 120 Million worldwide with about half of that figure viewing from the US where it is the number 1 sport in a country of 313 million. Im pretty sure the Rugby World cup final would of had a similar if not larger television audience than that. I know the cumulative audience form all the 48 game combined sits at around 4 Billion & there's nothing wrong with that. So I don't know why you are all talking up the NFL numbers.

Ok next I wanna see SBW vs Badr Hari.
Its a win/win for both fighters. Badr gets a high profile fight and SBW gets a potential future heavyweight title contender.
Also @golden_statenba
The only people that go to see the NFL in London is americans living in the UK. Nobody from the UK cares about the NFL.

Its amazing how SBW's star qualities attracts such bitterness and jealousy from some . The Aussie League boys probably have the only genuine axe to grind and surely his walk out was long enough ago to let wounds heal. He is an extraordinary athlete who wants to try his hand at boxing and mismatches in this sport are not exclusive to SBW fights. Its the nature of the sport.
If anyone has any justifiable reason to knock this guy I'd love to hear them . Maybe I'm wrong but I'm yet to be convinced all this hate is nothing more than tall poppy syndrome.

@ caramba13... he was locked up for failing to appear at a hearing, his lawyer somehow convinced the judge he got his dates wrong (prob on account of all the drugs he'd been smoking?) so he got out... and was obviusly brought to the 'tron as Act I in their now-inevitable bout. Can't wait for it, they could have it at half-time during a Bledisloe, get $BW warmed up for his 2nd-half cameo...
The Title, if anyone cares, was held by Kevin Skinner in the early '50s.

@golden_statenba - While I am a fan of the NFL & was shattered to see the Patriots have it stolen from them again it must be boring as hell actually going to one of those game. I mean without the add breaks & commentators filling up the gaps every 30 seconds it must be like watching paint dry for 2 of the 3 hours. The atmoshpere would be the reason I'd go.
And your London statement it stupid, Twickenhem is the home of English rugby & that's where they play all their home games. It just happens to be slightly smaller then Wembley. Both of the games sell out & I'm sure if it were the AB's at Wembley they would sell out too.
I'm not going to argue with you about which is better to watch because it's strickly subjective but to me their is nothing like an AB's/Springboks or AB's/Wallabies test. High octane physicallity for 80 mins.
I feel sorry for you if ESPN only shows the six nations :P

@ BVD says "...dangerously close to degenerating into sanitised phyiscal theatre a'la soccer". Would that include taking a dive so that your opponent gets binned? Seriously man, use the By Country drop-down menu at the top of the page, select South Africa & spare yourself the horror of reading about other countries... and us having to read yet another rant about the RWC being rigged, BL being a cheat, everyone (esp the IRB) being anti-SA...
@ Trinats... so why'd you click on the story in the first place? It's as newsworthy (or not) as the latest exploits of laptop retriever/ ipod boy (my spy at his gym says the rehab appears to be going well btw).

Agree with Billy
NFL is not mine either but rugby has a long way to go. More people go watch NFL teams play in London then go watch the All Blacks when they play in London and rugby is a popular sport in the UK.
@Frank81 have to take your word on that never watched them?
