Pumas resist Leopards comeback

23rd September 2011 19:48

Coenie van Wyk of Pumas v Platinum Leopards

Coenie van Wyk: 22 points

The Pumas claimed their second Currie Cup win in as many weeks with a 32-19 victory over the Leopards on Friday.

The Pumas raced into an impressive 25-0 half-time lead but the Leopards scored 19 unanswered points in a 10-minute blitz after the break to narrow the gap to just six points.

Even though both sides scored three tries each, the Leopards were punished for conceding too many penalties in kickable areas.

Pumas fly-half Coenie van Wyk boasted a 100 percent kicking success rate from his five penalty attempts to take the side to victory.

Earlier, Van Wyk converted two penalties inside the first five minutes to hand his side a six point advantage.

Pumas wing Wilhelm Hendrik Loock scored the first try in the ninth minute for an 11-0 lead.

Van Wyk slotted two more penalties, before scoring a try himself in the 23rd minute.

In the second half, the Leopards came back into the game and scored their first try in the 51st minute through full-back George Tossel.

Four minutes later, hooker Gavin Williamson scored the Leopards' second try, and on the hour mark, flank Philip de Wet scored his side's third.

In the 66th minute, Pumas flank Jaco Bouwer sealed the result with a try and Van Wyk converted to lead the visitors 32-19 where the score remained until full time.
